nightmare on my blog.

i watched the freddie series recently - it's pretty rad for old horror. I didn't go through the new ones, just the classics up to dream warriors.

I heard there's a remake coming soon (surprise surprise) . here's my version of Frederick Kruger, the main protagonaist.

Art Show Tonight

There's a show at Gallery1988 tonight.
7020 Melrose Ave. in LA.

If you're interested in going. I'll be there and Kevin Smith/ Scott Mosier should be too. It's a show with art representing moments from their podcast called SModcast.

The show is called SMart and it's Kvin Smith and Scott Mosier. They're pretty rad. If you haven't listened to their podcasts, they're pretty not bad to really good.

Here are the pieces I did for the show. They're pretty small and inexpensive, so if you like them - they won't take up much space in your wallet or on your wall.

How the poster turned out.

If you're interested, it's selling at gallery 1988
http://www.nineteeneightyeight.com/
415) 409-1376
If you're NOT interested, it's cool - just enjoy the pics.

This is how the final came out:

24x24 mounted to canvas.
"mixed as f_ck media"
It's called Where are the Wild Things? - or something like that...

Here was one of my last posts on the subject with a few more progress shots:

I'm posting another shot of the poster.

Here's a bunch of in progress pics with varying degrees of "doneness". Werd?
I took pages from Maurice Sendak's children's book "Where the Wild Things Are" and I pasted them around and in the image, so it's a collage of my stuff and Maurice's stuff. I hope he doesn't mind, but it's the only thing I could think of when I got the Wild Things poster assignment.

here's a pic of it drying before I put some more touches, pack it, and ship it up to SF. I tried to jam this piece with a bunch of little stuff to look at. Maybe some of you internet peeps will get a chance to see it in person? If not, I'll try to get a decent photo up at some point. iPhone just isn't cutting it.

I hope some of your viewers dug the process. This piece was really fun to make, plus i love wildthings AND denise richards. allot. good combo - it's very Cookies and Cream, except less calories. Calories, at this point in my life, are something I DO NOT NEED.

F-ck it, I'm out. I've gotta go to the fridge and point a pint of cookies and cream. This post made me hungry.

cheers.

hero's in a half shell - chipotle power

Hey guys, I remembered that I didn't post theses. I did them a while back - they're more chipotle art. They sold at a gallery in LA a month or so ago. It was a really interesting show - superman was there. :-S
Also - there were several girls dressed as anime characters. That's pretty hot, but then when you think of the concept - grown women dressed as cartoons... it kinda makes you wonder. Hey, I like it, but I can definately acknowledge that there are a few screws loose in my head. Namely the fact that I'm THIS old and I love me my cartoons.

Another slice of progress.

Little by litte, that's how anything gets done I suppose. Everyday I'm trying to create a new beast.

Progress pictures are fun although a time lapse would be more cool - I don't have that sorta setup. So here's to second best:

birth to death for this part of the image.
I gave this wild thing a skull nose. I love the idea of using a skull as a nose and I don't do it often enough. It's not so easy to tell and it sorta looks like a mushroom (grrrrr) but other than that, it's all good.

another movie poster post.

Ok - i listened to you guys. I'm likely to add some NSFW elements. (insert evil grin) I can always blame it on the blogosphere - YOU guys made me do it.

Today I prepared another figure to gesso onto the poster:

inked, cut, and then I like to use an old sharpy and cover the edges so they're black and not paper colored. It makes the thing look more polished.

I'm probably going to add six or seven more character cutouts to the poster and then some little tiny random ones. It all depends on how much time I can make and how it looks when I secure all their positions over the art. I have an idea in my head on how I'm going to do it, but life has a way of getting between your head and your canvas.

There's still plenty of loose time for tragedy.

another post for the movie poster blog

I drew up a few creatures that I'll be adding to the mix.

Today I don't feel like talking much, so I won't, EXCEPT to say, that this is much more comfortable now. I'm working on that menu stock, which has excellent tooth and the tone is so freindly and familiar.

If you want to see pieces I've done in the past on the stock - check here:
http://fourthwish.com/thumbnails.php?folder=chipotle

there's innocent stuff like this:http://www.fourthwish.com/post/greetings_from_outer_space.jpg
and unnocent stuff like this:
http://www.fourthwish.com/post/low_rez_058_commission_ice_cream.jpg

here's some iphone photography of the art:

a "creature" of sorts

a "beast" of sorts

Speaking of innocent or un-innocent - if anybody reads and wants to comment in the comment fields - which was should I go with this piece? I'm always tempted to put a little bewb and booty action pieces, but I'm not really sure.

If anybody is brave enough to put their opinion on the comments field or on my blog - i'll take it into strong consideration.

And I didn't want to talk this morning....

A journal entry about creating some art for a show

ok.

Andrew Wilson here. (&Rew.)
Age: 1 millioin
Likes: Monsters, nudity, tempura, scotch, snow flakes
Dislikes: human flakes, mold, sunburns, mushrooms
Poster: Wild Things

Gallery1988 SF gave me an assignment: paint on a poster for a show. i got a poster a long time ago, but i've been super busy forever and a half. Last weekend I started working on stuff to see what would happen.

The movie poster is kinda slick and I only paint with markers, ink, watercolor/ ink washes etc. I use acrylic but barely. What does that mean to you? You don't give a f_ck, right? Well that means I can't do my typical thing cause it would slip off the slick paper.

I DO however, know how to use a knife, since I was trained as a knife fighter since birth. So I'm gonna draw/paint (or whatever) on something that I know how to deal with - and then mount it to the poster.

I tried vellum:

This was my vellum sample page. I just did some random doodles and was going to gesso them onto a magazine to see how they held up.

The paper curled up like one of those party favor whistles - you know "foooooooooo". Those ones. It curled up like the wicked witch of the east's toes when she got hit by a f_cking house. As we all know, that's a good thing for everybody but the witch - and currently, I play the witch.

Result: F minus

I'm sad because that would have looked awesome on the poster . And my idea is to do 7 monsters plus a certain "king" of the monsters and gesso them over the poster.

IDK if I wanna crop it down or not though, cause this thing is HUGE. And I may want to mount it to board or something. Cause that always looks nice.

So I think, f_ck it. I like drawing on chipotle menus. I have a stack as tall as an elk in my room. I'll make art on those and exacto them out with my knife skills. And try gessoing THAT on.

Pre-knife sh_t.

post-knife opperation.

So I doodle and then cut and and the paste. It works like a charm. The next thing to do is to see if I can paint white highlights over the gesso (which is a likely yes). Now I have an idea, and I have a plan.

I guess this story is to be continued.

I'm adding these posts to my personal blog as well, but if you want to check that out it's:

¿in the nick of time?

i said i'd do a post it pet this week and it's sunday - so does it count if I throw one up tonight?

here's a piece I did for a friend this week:

It's a dragon.

I like the thought of a dragon you fly with harnesses and shoot fire out his head like it was a canon - hence the metal aiming crosshair thingies. I should have done once with a wooden steering wheel. Oh wheel, there's always next time.

the shortest distance between two points

i have very little to say this morning.

it's going to be a long day at work.

Here's a piece I finished some time ago:

Red Sonja - like the movie that's coming out in the next few years by Rodriguez (i think). It's traditional - ink wash and acrylic. 12" by 12" mounted to wood.

It's also available IF you're interested - at gallery 1988 right now. gallery1988@aol.com

Have a good day today.

comic con is rad.

2 things:

Thing 1. Comic con is rad. I've met a ton of cool peeps. I even met demetri martin after the show on some side street.

Thing 2. I made more art because it's been a while since I did. I moved and hadn't set my computers up completely. I'm still shit for a set up - the keyboard scrapes my leg and the wacom is in a totally f_cked spot. I did manage to throw a few lines though. so i sat up for a good majority of the evening working this out while my buzz from all those white russians went away.

if you stopped by isle 1000 (H3) and said hi - and then checked the blog - i really aprpeciate you stopping by. Now go send that postcard I gave you to an art lover you know, and draw something sick (or really good) on the back of it (i think you know what i mean).

thing 3.

a bunch of tradish pieces.

here are several pieces that I did recently. I'm trying to get a good feel for a way to do traditional pieces that have a splash of color in them and are interesting to look at. Traditional isn't the easiest, but it is so open ended and the possibilities just keep growing - i really have a good time exploring in real media.

These ones are all paintings of Red Sonja. If you don't know who that is - it's sort of like Conan's female counterpart. She was dreamed up by the same writer. She had a movie staring Bridget Nielson (i think that's how you spell her name) and Arnold S. was in it too.

At any rate, I used to love her comics when I was little. They had monsters, swords, and boobies. It's pretty much a perfect combination. I'd never yet done any pics of red Sonja and now that I have - it's all i want to do. (^__^) I'm working on another one for the Crazy4Cult show in LA next month. It's shaping up to be a really fun piece and I can't wait to post it, but before I post it - i have to finish it.

I'll find some time and get back to you on that one.

cheers,
&Rew.

Oh yah, and in case you were wondering - they're ink washes, a little water color, and some acrylic and then they were mounted to board.

what would we do without music?

I made a joke the other day about a piece of music - I said "this song is so good that it should be the only song on earth." It's not a terribly funny joke - well, it's not funny at all, but once I said that I realized just how awesome it is that we get more than one song.

I think it's one of those things that we all take for granted - and it's easy to take for granted because it doesn't make logical sense that there would only be one song... but, well, imagine a world with only one song and then open your eyes to the real world - infinite possibility. it's fantastic.

The same thing goes with visual art. So why do I keep doing the same thing? I like it. I'm trying to keep each of these images different enough so that they're interesting.

When I fail at that - don't be afriad to call me out. That's what the anonimity of the internet is for.

On the other hand if you enjoy the art. Here's another song painted into black, white, and red.

Do have a good day.

Artdition (art + addition)

Here's a red sonja piece i did. It's a nother practice piece to try out this technique. I've done 10 of these pieces. There for a show that's coming up. I don't usually add color to my traditional pieces and I've really wanted to for a long time, so I bit the bullet a month ago and started doing it.

Let me know what you think. Criticism is always welcome here.

I'm a big red sonja fan, so 5 of the 10 pieces are red sonja - the other ones are VG classics. (^__^)

I did have enough time to do this today.

chances are - they didn't notice.

My figure is almost done and I'm really excited about it.

If you came to the Seattle Comic Con, I had a prototype sitting out. And if you stopped by and said hi to me then I really really appreciate it. I met allot of cool people. Wade and I had a great time.

Here's an unpainted pre-mold version. There are a few bugs with the paint job but as soon as I get all the kinks ironed out I'll put it up online. I'm doing a run of about 100 figures and the final price will be determined by how much I can get the glass and shipping for, but I'm shooting for less than $75 and it's going to include a postcard and a copy of my imaginary kingdom book.

more SxSW film

I've recently seen
Observe and Report (awesome)
Lesbian Vampire Killers (super)
New World Order
& Trust Us, This is All Made Up (rad)

So far so good. Here's an answer key to my bag art for SXSW Film. I'm also posting some photos I snagged from Harry Knowles at the aint it cool website. I'll replace em when I get a chance to photograph the bag myself at some point.

SXSW is really awesome, but when I go back to watching movies at my local theaters (like Landmark Hillcrest and the Ken) I'll be sad to be watching these movies without all the camaraderie and even some of the actors or directors in the theater. That's a feature that seems to be making these movies seem better while I'm watching them. I fear that I'm enjoying them too much just because people who worked on them are in the crowd. Well, that's all over today as most of the bigshots have headed home.

I'm currently at the south by southwest film festival in Austin Texas. It's pretty rad.

So far I've seen:
I love you, Man
Adventureland
Best Worst Movie
Winnebago Man
Drag Me to Hell
& ExTerminators

To be honest, they've all been good to great. Best Worst Movie was impossibly cool for a few reasons I can't explain right now cause my head is bangin from Asahi Black and I just got out of Sam Raimi's work in progress - Drag Me to Hell - which was really funny/ jumpy scary. It was paced really well and I had an awesome time. Directly to my left, Raimi, was sitting across the isle. I tried to take a picture with my phone but got scared when the infra-red scope bouncer was looking at me.

That's how it goes sometimes...

oh yah - this pic is art i did for them. i'm too tired to go into what it is and who the pics are, but i'll post when i wake up and am no longer drunk.

F minus...

i'm a dude, and i likes me a few boobs, tail shaking, violence, and revenge. hostel though? no. i guess i've just been watching too many good movies lately to settle for that one. what's a good comparisson? it's like taco bell versus really-good-bertos-hole-in-the-wall mexican. And if you're not from So. Cal, or one of the other south western states - you may not know what a difference that is. down here they name all the restaurants to end in "bertos".

Saved by the Belding.

This is a piece I did for the postcard for an upcoming artshow.

It's at Gallery1988 and it's called Idiot box - it's an arts how dedicated to T.V. shows we all know and love or know and hate... Like Saved by the Bell or Knight Rider or Alf or Fraggle rock. (*__*) I LOVE ALL THAT STUFF.

from the Gallery 1988 LA site:

"Idiot Box" will feature almost 100 artists depicting their favorite television guilty pleasures. The shows you can hardly admit you love, but in all honesty, you LOVE the shit out of them. And yes. On April 2, the night of the opening reception, Dennis "Mr. Belding" Haskins will be hosting the extravaganza to not only celebrate the Gallery's milestone, but also the 20th Anniversary of Saved by the Bell! "Diff'rent Strokes." "Small Wonder." "Double Dare." "Flava of Love." It basically doesn't stop.

I painted the saved by the bell kids on top of an actual 8X10 that Dennis "Mr. Belding" Haskins gave the gallery owner to use. I thought it was kinda fun.

I hope you like it and I hope you go to the show and say hi, cause I'll probably be there unless something really big or serious comes up.

Getting crafty

I spent several hours today both in the aisles of Michael's craft store - wandering around and looking for just the right color threads and some sort of manual on how to use it - and stitching with a little needle and said colored threads in front of the television.

I have a pretty comon laptop bag, and I wanted to differentiate it from any other bags that I may see on the streets of the world.

I thought to myselef, "Pixel art is just like cross stitching." And with that, it was TO THE INTERNET! To find a good template for stitching something I like. I picked out Boo from SNES mario. He's so cuuute.

Here are the pics of my adventure. I will definately be doing more of this if the opportunity ever arises. It's so fun and relatively easy.

Solo show at Culturator (Seoul, Korea)

Today I have the honor of showing in Seoul Korea at this awesome gallery -here- It's called Culturator or (Gallery + Ctrt) for short.

I'm really excited about it because it's the first place I've sold superhuge canvas prints of my characters. They look really nice, so you should stop by the site and take a look if you get the chance. (or if you're in seoul)

I didn't get to t=go to the show cause I'm busy with my day job, but I would love to oneday stop by there and meet the gallery owner Wany, who is a pretty chill guy. I really hope the show does well for his sake of setting everything up and coordinating over such a long distance. I'll put some pictures and link of/to the show when I have a chance to pick some cool ones out and upload them.

It's open till late January, so you still have time to stop by. (^____^)

merry christmas yall.

This painting is a result of a really interesting project.

I owed a favor to somebody and they called it this christmas.

The request was to paint a "christmas" card, and upon my asking, the person who wanted it didn't tell me to stay away from any particular issues or imagery. So I took all the liberty I wanted and just painted santa and a couple little CMYK elves (it was for a printer).

Funny thing was that the printer didn't get back to me in a timely fashion and by the time there was only half a day left before they needed to print the cards - they finally wrote me an email saying "Ok well I like it but my boss needs it to be more non denominational, he is Jewish..."

When asked what I should do to make it right for her and her boss, I was told (and I'm quoting all of this from email) "Shit I am not sure either maybe throw some Jewish shit in there..."

I was pretty offended. I'm not jewish but to just throw around culture like it's a bag of garbage is not really my style. I don't like to hear people belittle culture like that.

At that point, I realized that I was dealing with a person without class, so I just painted a bonfire over santa and called it a night. I still liked this version, and I hope it doesn't offend anybody. But the next time this woman calls asking for a favor for her work i'm going to have to say "Shit no...maybe you should learn some more politically correct shit."

Oh well... Shit, you live and you learn.

there are no strings on me.

i always liked this character. i suppose this is no way to treat him... but after the way he treated his own father, he deserves such a thing. and in the book - i do believe that he burned his own hands off (i have been corrected, it was his feets. ;-)), though i'm not totally sure. i think that happens at some point after he kills the cricket.

what a tale.

Go fly a kite, you!

I did this last night to just pass the time.

Now that I think about it - I never really could get those kites to fly right. I remember running around with the kite string in a field in New Mexico when I was about 3ft. tall.

At some point the kite took at down turn and smacked into the earth hard, which perhaps wouldn't have broken it, had the damn thing not gotten caught on a barbed wire fence.

Something tragic like that, although the memory escapes me just like the joys of flying the kite did on that day.

I kinda like the quip - "Oh - go fly a kite!" It's a pretty good one and it's not altogether too offensive. It gets the point over just so. Subtle, but minorly effective.
