Bubble Bobble / Puzzle Bobble Neon Sign art

Pacman, Hamburgers and Shakes, Bubble Bobble, arcades - I tried a bit of everything.

The best thing ever happened.  I made a neon sign.  Well, I didn't do that, because making a neon sign requires glass bending skills, a workshop, and a black belt of ninja art mastery, while I only have a green belt in looking at art.

I designed a neon sign.  Here's how I started.

I built a bunch of sketches around the concept.  I used a bunch of classic arcade/Diner bits and tried to incorporate what he wanted in simple thick elegant line work so the bender wouldn't have a helluva time.


So the guy I was designing for, he liked on in particular, so I turned it into a slightly cleaner sketch, which you can see here.  He loves Bubble Bobble / Puzzle Bobble.

Bob and Bub pictured, because they're awesome and they provided a great color palette

 After everything was built to his liking, I took the work into illustrator to model it perfectly.  It also gave me one more opportunity to play with the size or the glass in comparison to the mass of the sign.

I wanted the thing to look nice and thick/dense with 15mm glass at the size it was to be manufactured.

The sign didn't have that in stock though and we had to go with 13mm.

We picked the sign up the other day and I snapped a few photos of it.  It came out really nice.  In person you can see the colors and they're a bit nicer, but in the iPhone photos, the bloom is a bit impossible to photograph.

A closeup of the neon so you can see all the connective bits.

Obligatory depth of field shot and the colors are pretty close in this one although it's still quite blown out.

The finished sign.  You can compare this to the concept sketch and see that it's pretty close, although if you ask me - I can point out several bits that are off.  I designed the thing of course I'd notice them!

Mission accomplished.  I have a few more neon signs concepts designed / planned and I'm hoping to work few some of them and have them at some upcoming art shows in 2014.

Greedo Never Fired

This one ended up being called "Seattleite StormTrooper" If you can't tell, I ripped the Morton Salt girl for the pose and colors. It's just too perfect not to steal.


I'm posting framed pics as well because that was part of the art, IMHO. I got a plaque popped onto the frame that says Rainstorm Trooper and picked out a simple black matte. It works perfectly.


This one was "Han SoLoL" and the frame says "Greedo Never Fired" on account of the OG Star Wars. I really hate all the changes that were made to the film. I know this is a hotly debated topic and I get the whole editing after the fact because he couldn't initially have his way at the time with technology the way it was, but nostalgia is really one of the only reasons I love that movie, and him changing it is like somebody trying to give me false memories as a child. I like all the mistakes and the puppetry and the weird shit and rubber masks in the OG starwars. In 10 years is he going to CG out all the bad masks in the cantina? Hope not.

At any rate, Greedo never fired. I had to art that.

Star Wars art show (Han Solo and a stormtrooper)

Preview of pieces I did for the upcoming show in Seattle called "These are the droids you're looking for" and it's all Star Wars art. ¿Cool yes? How I love low brow art.




It's tomorrow night from 6-10. I'll be there around 8:30.

Hand Solo in "Han SoLoL" and a Storm Trooper in "Rainstorm Trooper" (I reffed the Morton Salt girl for this if you couldn't tell. AND YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO TELL).

They're both ink washes. I'll post big versions after the show goes live. So you'll have to deal with the low rez 1990 sized jpegs for now. (^__^) 640x 480 is soooo played out.

Thing 1.

I've decided to give away the Samus prototype in order to promote my blog. I'm not good at marketing my art, just at making it, so I don't really know how to do this.

Metroid's Samus figure

I finished the Samus sculpture! Woot woot. It took forever and got in the way of a whole barrel of life, but was worth it.

Not quite yet

This is a spraypainted piece from last night:
And another version of it from sometime later:(the middle is me, the left and right belong to other coworkers) The backside is also loaded with awesome art, but the artists requested to remain in the shadows for the time being.

I'm new to painting with cans, but it's awesome the things house paint can do not on houses. If I ever own a house, I'm totally painting the outside like that. I promise. Yeehaw.

I'm learning how to paint with a few coworkers who will for now remain nameless. You can expect more awkward pieces and weird color combos in the immediate future should I be happy enough with them to post them on the interwebs.

And for any of you looking for it Metroid is coming! Well, the Samus figure is almost done but I don't have any good pics and it's still in a few pieces and minus the base.

Present for my buddy.

I worked with a guy for around 8 years and always promised him a decent piece of art, so I made one for he and him and his wifey. It's a cartooned version of her.

I haven't done much traditional lately, so I was a bit rusty on it.

GALLERY 1988: MELROSE
"IS THIS THING ON?
1OO artists take aim at funny people
Opening Reception January 7, 7-11PM

This is a piece for the upcoming Gallery 1988 show: Is This Thing On? The piece is of one of my favorite comedian's Demetri Martin. It's a mashup of a bunch of his jokes (mostly from the 'Sames and Opposites' shtick that he does. I'll list them at the bottom of the illustration, although if you haven't listened to his jokes, maybe you'd better first. It's better in context than just typed at the bottom of the page.

The piece is about 11x14 and it's ink wash and acrylic paint. It's available for sale at the gallery if you'd like to pick it up. Although there's only one - it's an original.

Title:
"These are illustrations."

Jokes:
I notice that there are no 'B' batteries. I think that's to avoid confusion. Because if there were, you wouldn't know when someone was stuttering.

From Checkers I learned that a king is when there's a guy that looks exactly like another guy right on top of him, but life taught me that that's a queen.

I just kicked one of my bells.That's not a good thing to say in life.It's one letter away from being something very painful.

A cactus is the opposite of a chair. In my house you can sit anywhere but there, especially if your ass is bare.

A bird house is not the same as a bird home, one is much more comfortable for birds.

A musical is the same as a burlap sack. I would not want to be in either.

Worms and bears aren’t very similar... until you think of the word gummy. Then they're very similar.

A squirrel is the same as a can, when there's a b-b-gun in my hand.

I'm gonna buy a bunch of hermit crabs and make 'em live together. People will say, `Are those hermit crabs?' I'll say, `Not anymore. They're mingling crabs.

(rainbow) Not gay… but supportive.

I'm working on more Megaman pieces, and I'll pop them up when I get a moment.

The show is coming.

I am such a tease. Here's what I've been working so hard on for the past few weeks. It's my first custom so it's not the best one in the universe, but I'm hoping that by all means, it's a good one in the universe. I would probably have posted up the finished gremlin piece if i wasn't so excited that it's being printed into little bitty postcards right now! The only question is how long should I open the free mailer invitation? I can't possibly afford to send out a hundred of those things, but I also want to get them out to a ton of people. There-in lies the dilema. I'm thinking a 48 hour grab is good. That seems like enough time to get tha word out.

Plus I'm playing Castlevania. It's driving me crazy because it's good but they did some bonehead things in it. VERY derivative. God of War + Colossus + Darksiders. Character design is rad. Combat is good. Puzzles BAD. Colossus BAD. Climbing and platforming BAD. Music is ok. Dialogue and writing BAD. That's my simple review, but it's been taking lots of time away from my ability to art.

And yes, there is a quarter of a nipple on that last menu, so A. don't get too aroused and B. don't rat me out.
