CALGARRRRYYYYYYYYYYY!

Ok, so I was in Canada for the last half week. It was awesome. You canadians are way cooler than most of my neighbors and friends (but not ALL of them).

Thanks for the warm welcome. If I met you at the show and you ended up stopping by my blog - i'm glad you're here.

Here's a finished piece for the calgary artbook I worked on:

Also, I now have postcards for sale. I don't know how to add a link to sell them but I'm thinking that for a stamp plus a buck or two, I'll draw on one and mail it to you. People seemed to like them at the show and I'm looking forward to mailing tons of them out.

be seeing you,

Another day another direction.

Art direction:
First, the good:
Lovin¹ the colors! I think the earth tones in the living room will really
let the figures pop out. The characters look like they¹ll fill out really
well, too. I¹ve only seen one Tron Legacy babe, and it looks like you
captured her perfectly. How about maybe adding in one more cutie, or two?

The concerns:
I didn¹t catch this the first time around, but being in color has helped
bring out a potential pitfall. At this point, the Recognizer tv screen is
half the image. All the other components are dwarfed by it, and it¹s the
other components (especially Flynn and Sark) that should be getting more
attention. Can we make them taller/bigger? If we need to, we could push the
Recognizer a little further back/up since we have some room at the top that
the wallpaper is taking up (nice pattern by the way!).

Smaller changes:
I get the reference for the Daft Punk outfits. Let¹s keep the outfits, but
change the helmets to look like these:

Production issues:
Is poster size too much?

-Ok. I upsized the characters and slightly scaled down the enforcer. I do like his monolithic size, so I took the focus off him by dropping him down a couple notches in scale and also in value. I also gave him space on his sides so he's part of a wall instead of A wall.

-I also made the 'bit' drinking a beer. IDK what yet, likely I'll switch to martini, because that seems more high class and I imagine this particular bit to be of privelaged upbringing.

-Speederbike looked dinky to me and everything was evenly sized - fixed that.

-I WAS going off a picture of tronstyle Daft but went with the classic helmets. I'm a bit torn but I'll go with the shiney ones cause I like chrome lately.

-On adding another character, i'll see if I can fit her in without cramping it too much.

oh ya - and poster size? werd. Canvas size is now: 5400x7200

be seeing you,

Update the tron sh_t already m_therf_cker!

Ok.

so work has been really really intense lately. i have have -0- time other than sleeping and working at my day job. the game i'm working on will be awesome though - no doubt. i've been really really tired.

today i was workignon another painting and put it down to do this:

Ryon, lemme know if it's on a good track or if you want something changed and I'll oblige.

i'm having fun with it.. Both chicks are from Tr2n. Sark and Flynn are in like... flynn(t). (^__^)

this is just a prelim i was doing to get a palette in there, but it turned into a little more cause i was enjoying painting.

1. more thing. Ryon, how big do you want this thing? What the hell am I printing? A business card? A billboard? When I rez it to paint the detail and really start to get down, how many pixels do you want me to work with?

Tron 1.01

Ryon emailed me with his direction. I'm pasting it as follows along with the layover sketch he did on my original sketch.

• Flynn or Tron vs. Sark
Let’s make it Flynn, for reasons listed next.

• Giant screen underneath one of those enemy droid things
I had to look this up; it’s called a ‘Recognizer’. I think the placement on this is perfect. Having one serve as a mantle around the TV made me chuckle. I think it would be great if a chunk of it’s foot was missing though, after Flynn throws his remote in frustration. It would be a nice ‘nod’ to the movie. I’ve sketched out what I had in mind. I hope the red corrections don’t bother you. Also, the Recognizers in the movie don’t have connected pieces, were you planning on leaving his pieces spaced out?

Also, maybe the Recognizer could have some empty glasses on it, and some water rings.

• Either pong on an Atari or a multiplayer NES game on a nes console.
I’m torn here. Pong on the Atari is more reminiscent of the Tron graphics, but the NES is like Holy Grail of my generation. Lets stick with Atari, though.

• White russians on the table (tron discs as coasters) (jeff bridges reference)
Love it!

• MCP lava lamp (the spinny CG guy in tron1)
The MCP demoted to the position of a lava lamp. Ha!

• A hottie from Tron 2 trailer in the foreground parlaying with Daft Punk
As an avid fan of Daft Punk, I completely approve of this idea! Though, how about one of them putting the moves on the Tron 2 hottie (maybe he’s showing her an electrical plug suggestively), and the other one could be talking with one of your black and white silhouette girls. Maybe she’s got some Tron glowies on her, but I’ll let you decide how to place her into the scene. I know the stylizations are different, so if placing one of the silhouette girls can’t work, maybe the second Daft Punk guy can be looking at a magazine with a silhouette fold out.

Seeing Daft Punk robot helmets in your painting should be pretty awesome.

• A speederbike tipped over
Perhaps a line torn through the carpet from where it’s tracer path was? This may not convey will in the painting, so leave it as something you can easily remove.

• Floating bit dude somewhere in the scene (yes yes yes no no no)
Bit? Yes yes yes!

• Tron girl from tron1 on the couch (i need cuties in my paintings)
I think we all need cuties in your paintings. The placement of more is completely ok with me.

• Wallpaper - something nerdy. I don't know what - something oldschool though. I may even use the wallpaper from when I was a kid in the 80s living in New Mexico.
I’m still trying to think of some wallpapers I remember from the 80’s. Most were tacky floral patterns, but I can’t recall a ‘nerdy’ one. I’m going to defer to your judgment on what you choose.

Possible Addition:
How about a portrait of a Tron family on the end table or coffee table.
I think this is going well. I came close enough on the first pass to not have to start over again... You can expect a new sketch at some point this evening.

IT IS trON 1.0

  • This is the sketch I came up with. It's a loose thumbnail that was originally going to be more loose before I started thinking about all the detail I wanted to include.

  1. Flynn or Tron vs. Sark
  2. Giant screen underneath one of those enemy droid things
  3. Either pong on an Atari or a multiplayer NES game on a nes console
  4. White russians on the table (tron discs as coasters) (jeff bridges reference)
  5. MCP lava lamp (the spinny CG guy in tron1)
  6. A hottie from Tron 2 trailer in the foreground parlaying with Daft Punk
  7. A speederbike tipped over
  8. Floating bit dude somewhere in the scene (yes yes yes no no no)
  9. Tron girl from tron1 on the couch (i need cuties in my paintings)
  10. Wallpaper - something nerdy. I don't know what - something oldschool though. I may even use the wallpaper fromw hen I was a kid in the 80s living in New Mexico.

    Ryon,
So at this point it's your call. Tell me what you love or hate. Scrap the whole thing if you want. Leave it as is and start making palette recomendations. Anything goes. Change the perspective. Move the characters around. Add or remove ideas. Art direct it. You can leave it as comments or email me and I'll integrate it into my next post. I want everybody to see this piece grow from your paragraph into a full art piece.

    Anybody else,
This art is interactive. Feel free to picth things in the comments. I like to connect to people and this seems to be as good a way as any.

    cheers,
    &.
